Visualizing the User Experience

1 min read , October 9, 2020

As I work with early-stage startups, I get the chance to work with savvy entrepreneurs and learn from them. I want to write about user experience tools that I have seen being used on both Fintech and e-Commerce websites.

When it comes to mapping user experience, it is just not enough to track numbers of visits and conversions; you have to "see" how the customers are using your site. A non-intrusive way of doing it is using tools like Mouseflow, Hotjar & Crazyegg. I have used Hotjar, and it offers:

  • Session Recordings: Videos of how your customers use your site. With the information of geographic location, browser, device.
  • Heatmaps: You get to see the "hot" areas of your site. These are the most visited or clicked areas.
  • Incoming Feedback: Get feedback from customers on various pages.
  • Surveys: Perform multi-question customer surveys.

The best practice is to look at metrics & Hotjar recordings side by side and, if possible, every day. These then drive the prioritization of your scrum backlog to make tweaks that improve your conversion rates.

If you are a UI/UX professional, you need to grasp how your users experience your website firsthand. This is one way to do it!
